30-Year-Old Man Dies in Suspected Suicide in Bamenda

A family in Bamenda is mourning the death of a 30-year-old man who was found hanging from a tree behind their home in Mankon village, Bamenda II Subdivision, Mezam Division in the North West Region.

Identified only as Kenneth, Laarry Times gathered that the deceased was discovered behind the house by the mother on the evening of Wednesday, August 5, 2026, below the GBHS Nitop Four neighbourhood.

Speaking to Laarry Times, Kenneth’s father, who is physically depressed, said he had no explanation for what led his son to take his own life.

“I left the house in the morning for Commercial Avenue to buy a padlock. While I was away, my wife went behind the house and discovered Kenneth’s body hanging from a rope on a pear tree,” he said.

“She immediately called me and told me that our son had killed himself. We still do not understand why he did such a thing. It appears he carried out the act on Wednesday evening, August 5.”

According to his father, Kenneth had struggled with drug addiction for several years, a problem that had caused concern among relatives and members of the community.

He said that on July 30, 2026, Kenneth was taken to the Gendarmerie Legion Headquarters at Up Station, Bamenda, by some traders at Food Market after he was accused of stealing a mobile phone. The phone had been handed to a technician for repairs before it went missing.

The father said he suspected that the owner of the phone later asked for Kenneth’s release after being detained for a few days, leading to his return home.

After coming back from a meeting on Sunday, the father said he found Kenneth at home. The family spent the following days with him, and on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, some of his friends visited and tried to encourage him to abandon his lifestyle and make his family proud.

“They spoke with him and advised him to change his ways,” the father said.

Family members say Kenneth, a native of Mbengwi in Momo Division, was unmarried and had no children.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as the family says they are still trying to understand what may have pushed him to such an action.

Authorities are expected to investigate the incident.
