The lifeless remains of two kids, Azah Marie Clofas and Tse Emmanuel, who were swept away by floodwaters in Bamenda, have been recovered.
The victims, a boy and a girl aged 7 and 5 years old, were carried away by strong flood currents at about 5pm on Sunday, August 2, 2026, near their home in the Ben and Bros neighbourhood around Ntarinkon in Bamenda II Subdivision, Mezam Division, following heavy rainfall.
Laarry Times gathered that the floodwater swept away the first girl child as he tried to retrieve his slippers taken away by the heavy floodwater. The second, a boy child, was also swept away after he tried to rescue his elder sister.
The Army Rescue Unit, led by the chief of center and senior warrant officer Taku Paul, resumed the search at 6am on Monday, August 3, 2026.
Tse Emmanuel's body was found at about 7:10am, while Azah Marie Clofas was recovered at approximately 7:50am. Both bodies were discovered in a swampy area at Below Ngomgham, adjacent to Street Four in the Mulang neighbourhood.
The remains were taken to the Regional Hospital Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations were conducted before they were released to their families on the instructions of the State Counsel for Mezam Division.
The two children were later buried at Alakuma Quarter in Mankon village.
Azah Marie Clofas and Tse Emmanuel were pupils at Ambam Quality Nursery and Primary School at Che Street in Ntarinkon. They had recently been promoted to Class Four and Class Two, respectively, ahead of the 2026/2027 academic year.
Rescue teams, assisted by residents, had searched throughout the evening of Sunday, August 2, 2026, but were unable to locate the children before nightfall due to poor visibility and strong water currents.
Elsewhere still in Bamenda, the heavy rains also swept away a Toyota Hilux parked at a garage near La Chance Bridge in the New Church Centre area. The vehicle was later recovered from the stream later that night by the army rescue unit in collaboration with the population.
The incident has renewed concerns over the dangers posed by flooding during the rainy season in Bamenda, where heavy downpours frequently cause streams and drainage channels to overflow, putting lives and property at risk.
