The leadership of the Bamenda Regional Hospital has changed hands, with Dr. Denis Nsame replaced just seven days after beginning a month-long work leave.
Dr. Sama Julius Nkam has been appointed the new Director of the regional referral hospital in a Prime Ministerial decision signed on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
The move comes as an unexpected change at the top of the institution, with Dr. Nsame’s leave having started only on August 1. He has now been called to other duties, bringing his time as hospital director to an end.
Dr. Nkam moves into the position from his previous role as Inspector of Pharmaceutical Services No. 2 in the Ministry of Public Health. His appointment places him in charge of a major health facility serving patients from across the North-West Region.
The new director takes over at a time when the Bamenda Regional Hospital is facing a number of operational challenges, including the aftermath of a fire that damaged part of the facility in late June.
The fire broke out on the night of June 29, 2026, at the hospital’s multipurpose department. Although no human lives were lost, the incident caused extensive material damage.
The affected building housed several essential services and administrative units, including the main drug store, Statistics Unit, Universal Health Coverage Unit, offices of the Medical Adviser and General Supervisor, Social Action Service, Library/ICT and Telemedicine Unit, hospital canteen, and Chaplaincy Unit. A conference hall with a capacity of about 150 people was also located in the building.
Medications, health statistics equipment, computer hardware and software, library resources, and office equipment were among the materials affected by the blaze.
The leadership transition comes roughly five weeks after the incident, although no official document has publicly linked the fire to Dr. Nsame’s replacement.
For the Bamenda Regional Hospital, the immediate challenge is to maintain normal operations while addressing the impact of the fire and other demands facing the institution.
Dr. Sama’s appointment also comes at a time when the hospital remains an important referral point for patients from across the North-West, making effective management and continuity of healthcare services a key priority.
As Dr. Nkam takes over, attention will now turn to how the new administration handles the hospital’s recovery needs, strengthens its services, and manages the institution’s day-to-day operations.
