Women in Baligham have praised their traditional ruler, HRH Samkie Elvis Gahnyam II, for supporting a project aimed at improving the economic and social wellbeing of women in the village.
The women and other sons and daughters of Baligham raised more than 10 million FCFA on Saturday, August 8, 2026, during a fundraising event at the palace esplanade for the construction of the Baligham Women’s Multipurpose Centre.
The gathering brought together more than 3,000 women and was described as a show of unity, peace and support for the traditional institution.
According to organizers, Fon Samkie Elvis Gahnyam II who doubles as the Mayor of Santa Council, allocated land for the construction of the centre and has also provided a significant quantity of building materials for the project.
The facility is expected to serve as a vocational training centre where women can acquire practical skills to improve their livelihoods and contribute more effectively to their families and the wider community.
Speaking on behalf of the women, President of the Baligham Women Cultural and Development Union (BWW) Worldwide, Dingha Judith Galabe, said the event had two main objectives. The official launch of the women’s fabric, which symbolizes unity and renewed commitment to development, and fundraising for the multipurpose centre.
She thanked the Fon, elites and other individuals who have supported the initiative, including Bah Chinda Primus, Mrs Dinga Blessing and the union’s Legal Adviser, Senior Prince Galabe Nicholas. Madam Dingha stressed that the centre would be open to all women of Baligham, regardless of their political, religious or cultural affiliations.
Hon. Bame Emmanuel, MP for the Balikumbat Special Constituency, who contributed 200,000 FCFA to the project, called for greater unity among Baligham sons and daughters. He urged residents to support the Fon’s development vision and speak with one voice for the economic and social advancement of the village.
He also encouraged residents to become ambassadors for the project, with the goal of making Baligham a more attractive and developed community.
The MP further announced that the road linking Baligham to Mbounda is expected to be tarred. He said the government, through the Ministry of Public Works, has allocated funds for the project and commended Public Works Minister Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi for what he described as his attention to the needs of Baligham and the wider Northwest Region.
For his part, Fon Samkie Elvis Gahnyam II thanked the women for their initiative and urged men to support their wives and children in making the project a success. He described the planned centre as an important economic and social opportunity for women and pledged to continue supporting the initiative until its completion.
The fundraising event ended with renewed calls for unity, community participation and collective action to advance development in Baligham.
