A major road link into Fundong, the capital of Boyo Division, is facing a growing threat of collapse after repeated landslides severely damaged the Bambui-Fundong road at Nkoini.
The affected section, identified as Boyui PK 49+200, is carved into a hillside that has become increasingly unstable under persistent rainfall. Parts of the roadway are being eaten away by landslides, raising fears that continued erosion could eventually cut off the route completely.
The danger has already forced authorities to restrict traffic. In a prefectural order signed by Boyo Senior Divisional Officer Menyong Gilbert Sunday on July 7, 2026, heavy-duty trucks, 70-seater buses and other vehicles weighing more than seven tonnes were prohibited from using the landslide-affected section until further notice.
The order followed an urgent request from the Divisional Delegate of Public Works for Boyo, who warned of the need to regulate heavy traffic along the damaged stretch.
Under the arrangement, heavy trucks and 70-seater buses heading to Fundong are required to load and offload their passengers and goods in Njinikom, from where smaller vehicles are expected to continue the journey to Fundong.
But the situation has deteriorated further. In a public announcement signed on August 6, 2026, Fundong Council Mayor Denis Awoh Ndang issued an even broader warning, urging drivers of vehicles weighing more than three tonnes to avoid the affected section altogether.
The mayor said heavy rains had worsened the condition of the road and warned that the section could collapse at any time. Continued traffic, he cautioned, could accelerate the destruction and trigger further landslides.
The warning comes as residents and motorists face increasing difficulties using the route. While lighter vehicles may still be able to negotiate parts of the damaged stretch, heavier vehicles face significant safety risks.
The authorities' concern is not only about traffic disruption. The Bambui-Fundong road is an important route for the movement of people, food, and other goods into and out of Boyo Division.
A complete collapse would therefore have serious consequences for communities that depend on the road for transportation and trade.
Mayor Ndang appealed to vehicle owners and drivers to respect the restriction while repair works continue, stressing that the measure is intended to prevent the road from being completely cut off.
For residents of Fundong and surrounding communities, the message is that the road is no longer simply damaged, it is becoming increasingly unstable.
With the rainy season continuing, authorities face mounting pressure to secure and rehabilitate the Nkoini section before another major landslide turns a difficult journey into a complete road blockade.
