For many people in Guzang, Dr. Chris Fomunyoh is more than a respected professional with an international profile. To them, he is simply “Ni Chris," a familiar face, a community man, and someone who has consistently remained connected to home.
Despite a career that keeps him engaged across countries and continents, Dr. Chris has maintained a strong attachment to his roots.
He proudly identifies with Moghamo and, most importantly, Guzang, where his connection to family, culture, and community remains firmly anchored.
That sense of belonging has shaped much of his involvement in community affairs. Those who interact with him describe a man who is approachable and willing to listen, regardless of age or background. His ability to engage with young people, elders, women, and men alike has earned him considerable respect within the Guzang diaspora.
His contribution to GUDA-USA is particularly notable. Dr. Chris has been part of the leadership and collective effort behind initiatives aimed at preserving Guzang's identity while supporting community development.
One of the most visible achievements is the Guzang Community Cultural Center, a major project now valued at more than US$1.5 million. The centre stands as a symbol of what sustained community involvement can achieve, and Dr. Chris has played an important role in supporting the project throughout its development.
His community work does not stop at Guzang. He has encouraged greater cooperation among Moghamo villages and supported initiatives bringing different Cameroonian diaspora communities together in the United States.
The Moghamo Youth Tournament is another area where his influence has been felt. Through guidance, encouragement, and practical support, he has helped promote an initiative that brings young people together through sport, culture, and community.
Beyond community affairs, Dr. Chris has also built a reputation for humanitarian engagement. His interests have extended to vulnerable communities affected by conflict and displacement in Africa and beyond. His work has included efforts focused on community empowerment, mentorship, and the promotion of democratic values and individual freedoms.
For Guzang sons and daughters at home and abroad, his story is ultimately about staying connected. His international responsibilities have not weakened his attachment to the people and place that shaped him.
That connection will be on display again at the 2026 GUDA-USA Convention. Dr. Chris has confirmed his attendance and will have the honour of escorting the two distinguished Guests of Honor to the End-of-Convention Cultural BBQ on August 16.
It is another opportunity for a familiar community figure to return, reconnect, and celebrate with his people.
