Two children have been swept away by floodwaters following heavy rainfall in Bamenda II Subdivision, Mezam Division of Cameroon's North West Region, rescue officials say.
Identified as Azah Marie Clofas, 7, and Tse Emmanuel, 5, Laarry Times gathered that the victims were reportedly carried away by fast-moving water besude their residence in the Ben and Bros neighbourhood at about 5pm on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
The Army Rescue Unit in Bamenda, led by Senior Warrant Officer Taku Paul, launched a search operation shortly after the incident.
Rescuers searched from Ben and Bros through New Church Centre at La Chance Bridge before extending operations to the area below the Army Rescue Unit and Street Four Bridge. By Sunday evening, the children had not been found.
Residents joined the rescue teams in the search.
Addressing the population, the chief of center, warned that the persistent rainfall and strong water currents were hampering rescue efforts. According to Taku Paul, the search is expected to continue on Monday, August 3, 2026, in the hope of locating the children.
Meanwhile, separate but unconfirmed reports indicated that two other children may also have been swept away by floodwaters in the Ntambessi neighbourhood of Bamenda III Subdivision on the same evening. Authorities have not yet verified those claims.
In a related incident, a Toyota Hilux parked at a garage in New Church Centre precisely at LA Chance Bridge was reportedly washed away by the floodwaters.
The incidents follow hours of torrential rain that caused widespread flooding across parts of Bamenda, raising fresh concerns over the risks posed by overflowing drains and waterways during the rainy season.
