Bamenda II Mayor Peter Chenwi has given 400,000 FCFA to commercial motorbike riders in the municipality to help them cope with the rising challenges facing their families as the 2026/2027 school year begins.
The support was handed over to a representative of the bike riders on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at the Bamenda II Council Hall.
Mayor Peter Chenwi said the gesture was part of his continued partnership with commercial bike riders in the municipality, describing them as important partners in the work of the council.
According to the mayor, his relationship with the riders dates back to 2020 and has grown into what he described as a family bond. “We have been like a family. When there are good and bad moments, we share them,” Chenwi said.
He praised the riders for their cooperation with the council, saying their contribution has made it easier for the municipality to carry out its activities.
Peter Chenwi said the current situation in the municipality requires solidarity and support for people who are facing difficulties. He described the bike riders as an important part of Bamenda II and said the council must continue to show concern for their welfare.
The mayor also commended the riders for their level of organization and discipline, particularly their commitment to wearing their uniforms while working. He said the partnership between the council and the association has helped both sides deal with several challenges over the years. “We have faced many challenges together as a team and have managed to overcome them,” he said.
400,000 FCFA for fuel
With schools reopening for the 2026/2027 academic year, Mayor Peter Chenwi said he decided to provide 400,000 FCFA to help the riders purchase fuel for their motorbikes.
He said the assistance would also help them continue working and meet some of their family responsibilities at a time when many households are facing financial difficulties.
The mayor said his support for the riders would not be limited to financial assistance, adding that the council would continue to consider their needs in areas such as education and healthcare.
He also urged the riders to remain responsible and continue contributing to peace and stability in the municipality. Peter Chenwi assured them of his continued support and appealed to them to maintain their discipline and sense of responsibility.
Bike riders welcome the gesture
Mayenin Ndi, President of the Bike Riders Association for Mezam, expressed appreciation for the assistance, describing it as another example of the mayor's continued support for commercial bike riders.
He said the latest gesture was not an isolated one, noting that Mayor Chenwi had supported the association on several previous occasions.
According to him, the mayor has consistently encouraged bike riders to promote peace and reject individuals who could create problems within their ranks. “He has called us to be ambassadors of peace in our various areas of work,” Mezam Bike Riders President said.
He said the riders had been encouraged to discourage their colleagues from engaging in activities that could threaten peace and coexistence. Mayenin Ndi also urged riders to report individuals who attempt to use the sector to cause trouble or damage its reputation.
He said the 400,000 FCFA assistance would help the riders keep their motorbikes running while allowing them to use part of their earnings to meet school-related expenses.
Association promises greater discipline
The association president said bike riders in Bamenda II have established rules aimed at promoting responsible behaviour among their members. He said the association would continue working to ensure that its members remain disciplined and uphold the image of the profession.
Mayenin Ndi recalled other forms of support received from Mayor Chenwi, including assistance with school materials and interventions in cases involving bike riders. He said the mayor had also assisted some riders with hospital bills and school fees.
In expressing their appreciation, the riders praised Chenwi for what they described as his humility, kindness and concern for their welfare. Ndi said the association had even given the mayor the nickname “the second Jesus” because of his continued assistance to residents and bike riders.
The association also pledged to work with the council in efforts to restore peace and normalcy in Bamenda II. He said the riders could not repay the mayor financially but could support the municipality by remaining responsible and helping promote peace.
“Our support is to be responsible bike riders and choose courage over fear so that this city can regain its lost name and glory,” he said.
The meeting ended with renewed calls for discipline, peaceful coexistence and cooperation between commercial bike riders and the Bamenda II Council.
The council's latest assistance comes at a time when families across the municipality are preparing for the new academic year, with many households facing increased financial pressure.
