Dr. Njomo Omam Esther, Executive Director of Reach Out Cameroon and a prominent women’s rights advocate, peacebuilder, and humanitarian, has been honoured with the Peace Builder Award 2026. This was during the National Conference of Women-Led Organizations in Cameroon.
Organized by the Network of Women-Led Civil Society Organizations (NEWOLEC) at the Yaoundé Conference Centre on August 27, 2026, the conference brought together women-led organizations and actors working across different areas of social development, peacebuilding, and humanitarian action.
Dr. Omam Esther, who had been invited to speak at the conference, was unable to attend the award ceremony due to circumstances beyond her control. In a gesture that underscored the significance of the recognition, Dr. Solange Swiri Tumasang personally presented the award to her at the Hilton Hotel.
The award recognizes Dr. Omam Esther’s sustained commitment to peacebuilding, women’s rights, humanitarian service, and community empowerment.
Receiving the honour with humility, she expressed gratitude to NEWOLEC, the jury, and those who voted for her, describing the recognition as both an encouragement and a renewed responsibility to continue serving communities.
Her work has often taken place in difficult environments where peacebuilding requires resilience, dialogue, and long-term engagement.
Through Reach Out Cameroon, she has been involved in initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable communities, empowering women and young people, protecting children, and promoting peaceful solutions to conflict.
The recognition also comes at a challenging period for Reach Out Cameroon, whose activities have been suspended. According to her, the organization had supported more than 2.845 million people in one year before the suspension, providing assistance centred on hope, care, and dignity.
Despite the interruption, she maintains that the impact of humanitarian and peacebuilding work cannot easily be undone.
For Dr. Omam Esther, the award is therefore more than a personal achievement. She considers it a recognition shared with her family, colleagues, partners, peacebuilders, women, young people, and communities who continue to believe that peace in Cameroon is possible.
Her message remains one of perseverance, even when humanitarian work is disrupted, the values of compassion, solidarity, and service must endure.
The Peace Builder Award 2026 adds another recognition to Dr. Omam Esther’s work and reinforces her public commitment to advancing peace, dignity and the rights of vulnerable communities in Cameroon.
