Lower Fungom Subdivision in Menchum Division in the North West Region brought its communities together on Sunday, September 20, 2026, for the closing ceremony of a football tournament that placed peace and unity at the centre of the celebrations.
The Lower Fungom Unity and Peace Tournament brought together 12 villages, including Mundable, Koshin, Fang, Aba, Mekaf, Yemge, and Ngun, among others.
The competition ended with Ngon-Panther FC lifting the trophy after securing a 1-0 victory in the final, in a match watched by hundreds of supporters.
The tournament was sponsored by His Royal Highness Ju Wilson II, Fon of Koshin Village and Member of the North-West Regional House of Assembly.
His contribution went beyond the football competition. More than 1.5 million FCFA was provided for prizes, trophies, jerseys, and the organization of the tournament.
The traditional ruler also donated books and other learning materials estimated at more than 2 million FCFA to pupils, students, and members of the wider Lower Fungom community. Together, the two contributions amounted to more than 3.5 million FCFA.
Representing Fon Ju Wilson II at the closing ceremony, his representative said the initiative was intended to encourage peace, unity, and peaceful coexistence among the villages of Lower Fungom.
The representative said bringing the communities together through sport was particularly important at a time when many communities in the region continue to face difficult circumstances.
The initiative received a positive response from residents, traditional authorities, youths, and local elites, who welcomed the support for both sporting activities and education.
The tournament ultimately served as more than a football competition, giving communities across Lower Fungom an opportunity to interact, compete peacefully, and strengthen their bonds.
