Bamenda III Council Steps In to Support GBSS Mbelem

Mayor Fongu Cletus, Quarter Members Joinly Handing Bench to the Principal

The future of Government Bilingual Secondary School (GBSS) Mbelem is receiving fresh attention following a donation of 80 benches by the Bamenda III Council and a pledge to support the roofing of the school’s permanent structure before the next academic year.

The intervention by Mayor Fongu Cletus Tanwe on Saturday, October 24, 2026, comes as the institution works to establish itself and move towards a more stable learning environment for children in Mbelem and neighbouring communities.

While the benches are expected to improve seating arrangements, the school’s long-term needs centre on preparing its permanent site for use. The institution is currently operating from a temporary facility provided by the Max Atanga Foundation, which is available for only one year.

Accompanied by Koti Joseph, the 1st Deputy Mayor, who supported the initiaive with the sum of 100.000 FCFA, Mayor Fongu Cletus said the council was committed to supporting the school’s development, particularly by helping to roof the structure at its permanent location.

He also called on parents to enrol their children, noting that the school has the capacity to admit more students.

The mayor urged families not to leave their children out of school when affordable government secondary education is available within their community.

Suh Sylvester Tangiebuh, 1st Assistant Quarterhead

For quarter representative Suh Sylvester Tangiebuh, the council’s intervention is an important contribution to a project that began with community efforts to establish a secondary school in Mbelem.

Cross Section of the Population

He recalled that residents had worked to meet government requirements and secure land for the institution.

He called on local elites, residents and well-wishers at home and abroad to join the effort by supporting the roofing of the permanent structure.

Tangie Joseph, Land Donor/Notable Mbelem Quarter

The appeal was reechoed by Tangie Joseph, one of the land donors and a notable in Mbelem quarter who said his contribution was motivated by the desire to give children access to educational opportunities he never had.

Having missed secondary education himself, Joseph said he was determined to encourage families to take advantage of the school. He has been visiting homes to sensitize parents and persuade them to enrol their children.

Student Representative Handing her Speech

The students’ representative welcomed the mayor’s visit and thanked the council for providing the benches, describing the donation as timely support for the young institution.

According to the Principal, GBSS Mbelem officially opened in September 2026 and already runs classes up to Form Three. With its temporary accommodation available for only a limited period, he disclosed that the school’s immediate challenge is to prepare its permanent structure for occupation.

The council’s pledge to support the roofing, alongside calls for contributions from the community, could prove crucial to securing a more stable future for the institution.
