REWAC, Empowers Rape Survivors with Comprehensive Care

Amidst sobering statistics revealing the pervasive nature of sexual violence
globally, with one in three women having endured physical or sexual abuse,
the North West region is grappling with heightened rates of rape, exacerbated by ongoing conflicts and cultural norms that uphold gender inequity.
Within this challenging context, the Refugee Welfare Association (REWAC) stands resolute in its mission to aid survivors of rape. Recently, REWAC organized a workshop focusing on clinical rape management, a crucial initiative aimed at providing comprehensive care and solace to those affected by this harrowing experience.
The workshop, attended by medical professionals and advocates, represented a significant stride towards bolstering the region's ability to respond effectively to the needs of rape survivors.
Distinguished facilitators, including Dr. Claudia Suiru and Dr. Beri, shared expert guidance on initial evaluations, forensic evidence preservation, and the paramount importance of adopting a survivor-centered approach.
Central to the discourse was the emphasis on cultivating a compassionate environment for survivors, safeguarding their privacy, and honoring their autonomy. Through this lens of empathy and understanding, healthcare
providers can offer more meaningful support to survivors in their journey towards healing.
A core lesson underscored during the workshop was the critical role of meticulous evidence documentation in seeking justice for survivors and holding perpetrators accountable. Nonetheless, the central message resonated that the well-being of survivors must always remain the focal point, and nit just a mere collection of evidence.
A moving discussion unfolded around the survival-centric approach, recognizing that survivors often prioritize immediate safety and basic needs amidst adversity.
Acknowledging this perspective enables healthcare professionals to tailor their support, addressing urgent requirements and empowering survivors in rebuilding their lives.
The workshop culminated with a sense of hope and resolve, with participants expressing gratitude for newfound insights and the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded advocates.
