Cameroon: MP3 Opposition Party Calls for Strict Application of Asset Declaration Law

Communique Addressed to the Director General of ELECAM.

The Patriotic Movement for the Prosperity of the People abbreviated as MP3, a Cameroonian opposition party, has written to the Director General of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) to demand the strict application of the law governing asset declarations by public officials and elected representatives.

The law in question, enacted in 2006, requires individuals holding public office or elected positions to declare their assets and properties within 90 days of taking office and within 60 days of leaving office. However, nearly 20 years after its promulgation, the MP3 party notes that the law has not been effectively enforced.

As the country approaches crucial elections in 2025 and 2026, the MP3 political party is urging ELECAM to take concrete steps to implement the law. Specifically, the party demands that:

- All candidates in the upcoming elections, including the presidential election, provide a valid asset declaration as part of their candidacy requirements.
- Candidates who fail to comply with the asset declaration requirement be disqualified from the electoral process.
- Validated asset declarations be published in a public register, accessible through a digital platform.

In a show of commitment to transparency, the MP3 has offered to design and provide the digital platform for publishing asset declarations free of charge. This move aims to promote good governance, accountability, and transparency in Cameroon's public life.

The MP3's initiative underscores the importance of enforcing existing laws to build trust between citizens and institutions. By holding elected officials and public figures accountable for their assets and financial dealings, Cameroon can take a significant step towards reducing corruption and promoting a culture of transparency.
