The Bafut Council has launched preparations for its 2026 financial year with a firm commitment to restoring stability, improving governance, and accelerating development across the municipality.
This direction was defined during the budget orientation session held on November 29, 2025, a meeting that drew together councilors, traditional rulers, partner organizations, and community representatives.
Opening the session, Mayor Ngwakongoh Lawrence highlighted the gathering as a milestone moment for a municipality working to rebuild after years of social and political unrest. He reminded participants that the responsibility entrusted to them by the population must be upheld through unity, transparency, and purposeful action.
Return to Bafut Receives Strong Backing
One of the most notable recommendations of the day was the call for the Council to re-establish full administrative presence within Bafut. For years, council activities operated outside the municipality due to the current sociopolitical crisis.
The Division Officer for Bafut, representing the Mezam SDO, endorsed the proposal, noting that the return would help reinforce public confidence and improve the coordination of local affairs.
Development Gains Amid Difficult Context
Mayor Ngwakongoh reported encouraging progress for 2025, with the Public Investment Budget recording an 86.87% execution rate. He credited this performance to close collaboration between the Council, community development committees, and local leaders who identified and prioritized urgent needs.
The Council’s achievements were registered in areas such as the expansion of basic infrastructure and community services, educational support and assistance to vulnerable households, empowerment initiatives targeting youth and women, and activities promoting peace and social cohesion.
“These results are proof that when we work together, our community moves forward,” the Mayor said, urging participants to maintain the same spirit as they map out the 2026 program.
Support to Villages Strengthened
As part of its ongoing partnership with local structures, the Council supplied construction materials to all 58 villages in Bafut. The initiative aims to boost grassroots development efforts and energize the municipality’s “Keep Bafut Clean” campaign.
Additionally, the Mayor announced that all projects launched since 2020 under his leadership ranging from roads and bridges to classrooms, health units, and youth centers had been successfully delivered.
In one of the session’s most memorable moments, the people of Njibujang Village presented the Mayor with traditional attire in appreciation of visible improvements in their area.
Clean Village Competition Rewards Best Performers
Participants also received the results of the Clean Village Competition, a council-backed initiative designed to promote environmental hygiene and healthy living habits. A total of 54 villages competed, with prizes awarded to communities that demonstrated exceptional cleanliness and organization.
End of Mandate Reflections
This session also carried emotional undertones, as it is expected to be the final budget orientation exercise for the current team of councilors. Mayor Ngwakongoh saluted the dedication of the 35 councilors who, despite turbulent times, remained committed to the development of Bafut.
He pledged to continue championing peace and social harmony, fair representation of all communities, efficient management of council resources, and strong participatory governance.
“We must continue making decisions that are practical, inclusive, and geared toward lasting development,” he told attendees.
